Kimi Raikkonen drives Lotus F1 Team to victory in Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Article by Anita Panait, on November 5, 2012

Lotus F1 Team’s Kimi Raikkonen drove his Lotus E20 -- boasting of an Enstone-Viry chassis-engine package – into a win at the recently held Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Raikkonen piloted his Renault RS27 V8-powered E20 to secure his first victory since 2009 Belgian Grand Prix, reaching the finish line only 0.8 seconds ahead of Fernando Alonso of Scuderia Ferrari.

Coming in third is Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing, crossing the finish line four seconds after Alonso. Vettel started from the back of the grid after post-qualifying Stewards' decision. Rounding up the top five are Jenson Button of McLaren and Pastor Maldonado of Williams F1 Team.

Maldonado’s teammate, Bruno Senna crossed the finish line in eighth, giving Williams F1 Team a double finish. Another team that scored a double finish was the Caterham F1 Team, with Heikki Kovalainen and Vitaly Petrov finishing at 13th and 16th respectively.

Mark Webber of Red Bull Racing and Romain Grosjean of Lotus F1 Team failed to finish the race after getting involved in an accident on lap 37, effectively putting them both out of the race. Rémi Taffin, Renaultsport F1 head of track operations, described the victory as a fantastic result for Lotus.

He remarked that the collaboration between Enstone and Viry has produced success in each of its incarnations, adding that it is a “pleasure to get a win in this latest stage” of their relationship.

Taffin quipped that both the track and the factory support on both sides came together very well, even while working on the new set of exhausts. With 255 points, Vettel remains the frontrunner to grab this year’s drivers' championship, 10 points ahead of Alonso who has total score of 245 points. At third is Raikkonen with 198 points.
