NAIAS to remain at Cobo Center for at least five more years

The Cobo Center will remain home for the Detroit Auto Show for five more years until 2017. Rod Alberts, executive director of the North American International Auto Show, and Thom Connors, Cobo Center general manager, signed the extension contract, which represents $1.75 billion in aggregate economic impact for region near Detroit. The value of the contract remains undisclosed.
Prior to the contract renewal, there were concerns that the Detroit auto show would transfer to another location, possibly to Novi, Michigan. The show’s organizer, the Detroit Auto Dealers Association, wanted more space for the event. Cobo Center history of mismanagement, corruption and waste further fueled the concern. Bill Perkins, chairman of the 2012 Detroit show, expects positive reaction from car makers on NAIAS’s decision to renew the contract until 2017.
“The agreement we put together is our commitment to Detroit and southeast Michigan,” Perkins said, adding that the deal was its way of saying “Detroit, we are with you.”
