New Lamborghini Aventador will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 20%

According to the latest reports from Automotive News, Lamborghini announced that its Murcielago successor dubbed Aventador LP700-4, will be greener than ever as it will reduce carbon dioxide emissions 20 percent, and this without sacrificing performance. “The new model is part of Lamborghini's commitment to slash carbon dioxide emissions by 35 percent by 2015,” said Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann. The new model, which is expected to make its official debut at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, will be powered by a new 6.5-liter V12 engine delivering 700 hp, more than the current Murcielago, which deliver 640 hp. Furthermore, the car is expected to emit only 398g/km of carbon dioxide, equivalent to about 17.2 liters of fuel per 100km or 15.6 U.S. mpg.
The current Murcielago emits 495g/km, equivalent to 22l/100km or 12.5 mpg, while the impressive Ferrari 599 GTO delivers 420g/km of CO2 and 620 hp. According to Lamborghini Technical Director Giancarlo Reggiani, the new numbers are a result of the new and more efficient powertrain which for 61g/km of the total 97g/km CO2 reduction in the new car.
Also, to reduce the emissions by 28g/km, Lamborghini installed new tires with lower rolling resistance and designed a more aerodynamic exterior. 8g/km CO2 reduction comes from using carbon fiber components, because the new car is with 100kg (about 220 pounds) lighter comparing it with the 1,750kg curb weight of the Murcielago. The new engine alone is 18kgs lighter at 235kg, while the engine from the Murcielago has a total weight of 253 kg.
