New Volkswagen Touareg R to receive diesel V8, making U.S. debut by 2012

2011 Vw Touareg

Volkswagen has given the Golf, the Scirocco and the first-generation Touareg the R treatment. VW’s R models are the fastest, the sportiest and the best in its lineup. The equivalent to this is the AMG for Mercedes-Benz and M for BMW. In Europe, VW’s big SUV is offered with R50 badges and it is powered by a 350hp, 5.0-liter V-10 TDI. That model wasn’t sold in the US but it’s likely that the R version of the new 2011 Touareg will be. The V-10 TDI was uprated from the 313-hp base variation but all the iterations have been suspended since they can’t meet the existing emissions standards. This engine is succeeded by the Audi’s 340hp, 4.2-liter diesel V-8 diesel.

This TDI is offered in the European Touareg, but it is unlikely to be offered in this spec. It’s believed that this engine will be reinforced in the forthcoming Touareg R and will deliver nearly 380 hp. This beats every diesel engine out there, except of course Audi’s 500hp, 6.0-liter twelve-cylinder, which is featured on the €130,000-plus Q7 V-12 TDI.

But since Audi doesn’t offer this engine in the US, VW gets the top prize in this country. The exterior of the Touareg R is distinguishable from its siblings due to its large air intakes, spoilers, and unique trim. It’s likely to be more different from the regular Touareg than this rendering. The Touareg R will arrive as a 2013 model in 2012. [via Car and Driver]
