2012 New York Auto Show: 2013 Land Rover Discovery 4 (LR4) Luxury Limited

Article by Christian Andrei, on April 4, 2012

Land Rover introduced the new Discovery 4 (LR4) HSE Luxury Limited Edition at the New York Auto Show. As its name says it, the new edition was built in order to turn heads and features a distinctive exterior look showing silver finishing picks which complement the Noble (satin chrome) plated door mirror caps, silver bonnet script and tailgate badge.

The front grille was also updated and now the grille surround and fender vents are finished in Indus Silver while the grille vanes are finished in body colour. The rear end now features a bright finisher along the sides and tailgate, completed by a stainless steel bumper tread strip but also by the unique metal badge showcasing 'HSE LUXURY'. Furthermore, the door handles are now in body colour, while the design is completed by new 20-inch, 10-spoke alloy wheels. Three new body colours are available: Santorini Black, Orkney Grey and Havana, offered for the first time on the Discovery 4.

Inside, the Discovery 4 HSE Luxury Limited Edition features Premium Windsor Leather, but also a new colour inspired by the Range Rover, the Arabica. The Premium Windsor Leather will also be found on the fascia top, instrument panel binnacle, door top rolls, armrests and pull, while the perforated leather heated steering wheel is finished in Arabica or Ebony.

The design of the interior is completed by the new Dark Zebrano (lacquered dark brown wood) veneer and twist pile luxury carpet mats with contrast edging. Still, Land Rover will offer plenty of upgrades, such as Harman/Kardon LOGIC7 Premium Audio system and Xenon Adaptive Front Headlamps including Cornering Lamps.

Under the hood we find the 211PS 3.0 LR-TDV6 and 256PS SDV6 diesel engines, capable to push the Discovery 4 from 0 to 60 mph in 9.9 seconds and 8.8 seconds respectively and to a top speed of 112mph (180kph) in both cases. Bot engines are mated to the super-efficient ZF HP70 8-speed automatic transmission.

For those who want even more, the Land Rover Discovery 4 Limited Edition can be fitted with the 375PS 5.0 LR-V8, providing acceleration to 60mph from rest in just 7.5 seconds and a top speed of 121mph. The V8 engine is mated to the ZF HP28 6-speed automatic transmission. European customers will receive the 245PS version of the 3.0 LR-SDV6, equipped with 6-speed automatic transmission with command shift. The Land Rover Discovery 4 HSE Luxury will go on sale in the UK from July 2012 with prices starting at £56,995 on the road.

Interior Design

The Land Rover Discovery 4’s interior reveals flowing surfaces that are smooth as well. It also shows that not only are the number of controls reduced but they’re also simpler now. Thus, it allows the interior to have an all-round, luxurious, and softer, feel. However, the brand made sure that despite this, it still exhibits the trademarked design language of the Discovery.

Helping the interior get that crafted bespoke feel is the combination of the center console, door casings, wrapped and stitched fascia, and the use of natural-finish wood. Two new colors will be offered which is Arabica, a darker tone, and Nutmeg, a mid-tone color. Both of them will complement the current Almond and its light-tone. With the console becoming more driver-focused, visibility is better with access to the controls improved. This feel is in fact much more similar to the Range Rover Sport instead of the Discovery 3.

Meanwhile, the center console’s front shows that the control of the Terrain Response is that much more prominent. This allowed for a cup-holder to be placed mid-way on this console and that much more accessible. The brand has revealed that all of the models will not only have a new steering wheel but will have the driver information switch layout redesigned. New features include heated steering wheel, cruise control, and remote audio controls.

Still on the interior of the Discovery 4, the first and the second rows will offer new seating. The cushion profile of the front seat meanwhile has been extended and thus enhances both comfort and support. Further, the height of the head restraints of the front seats can be adjusted.

This replaces the standard grab handles that are mounted on the seats. Land Rover Design Director Gerry McGovern shared that the interior of the Discovery 4 still has that excellent visibility for both the driver and the passengers, offering versatility. The cabin has become even more desirable, he added, due to the use of high-grade materials and the fact that the console architecture and the fascia have been redesigned.
