Next Bmw 5-Series coming with an all-steel chassis

2011 Bmw 5-Series

The succeeding BMW 5-Series will come with an all-steel chassis instead of the part-aluminum construction of the present version when it is opened in 2010. This move is made for cost and ease of manufacture purposes. Previously, the 5-series utilized an aluminum space frame front end, bonded and riveted to a steel rear to distribute and reduce weight. The structure, however, proved to be too expensive and quite difficult to make especially in larger volumes. Furthermore, BMW will not provide its new 7-Series with an aluminum front end. This revision is made clear by the 5-Series GT Concept, the executive hatchback revealed at the Geneva last week which will become the production model of this year. It comes with an all-steel structure.
