The three-cylinder engine that BMW has been working on to power the next-generation BMW 1-Series is also likely to be put in the next-gen Mini Cooper too, according to a Motoring File report. It is believed that with a smaller engine, Mini would be able to at least maintain the performance while also improving fuel economy. When using this engine, the 2011 Cooper would be able to generate 122hp while the 2011 Cooper S will be able to deliver 184hp. Motoring File said that this action would result to an mpg comparable with the Mini Cooper D (the diesel version) through the use of turbocharging, direct injection and Valvetronic, as is evident on the 2011 Mini Cooper S. It can be recalled that Ford made similar pledges in Beijing in its introduction of a 1.0-liter three-cylinder that can generate an estimated 120hp. This small EcoBoost engine will arrive in the US as early as 2012 or 2013. [source motoringfile]
