According to the latest report from Autocar, it appears that the next-generation Mitsubishi Lancer Evo might use a plug-in hybrid system that will be unveiled at this year's Tokyo Motor Show on the PX-MiEV Concept. This move of the Japanese manufacturer will definitely change the world of sports cars but it would not ne the first: as you may know already Honda also plans this move on the upcoming CR-Z hybrid coupe.
Regarding the PX-MiEV Concept, this comes with front and rear wheels powered by two 81bhp permanent magnet synchronous motors as well as a 1.6-litre MIVEC petrol engine which serves also as a generator.
According to our sources, the system is configured around Mitsubishi's Evo-style S-AWC handling control system and can automatically switch between different drive modes depending on driving style and the energy stores in the lithium ion battery pack. With this new system installed, the manufacturer promises an impressive 140mpg economy which would be more than enough for a sports car.
