Next generation Audi S5 to receive V6 engine instead of V8

In a comprehensive revision for the Audi's top-trim cars, the succeeding S5 will be equipped with a V6 in lieu of a V8 engine when it becomes available in 2009. An insider from the company tells Inside Line that, in the steps of the recently launched Audi S4, the S5 will receive the latest 329-horsepower supercharged V6 engine that is on call to substitute for the old 4.2-liter V8. The V8 was utilized in the preceding S4 as well other high-line Audi versions. "Not only does this new engine get nearly the same horsepower and more torque," said the Audi insider, "but the fuel efficiency with the V6T improves by 30 percent over the V8." The latest S5 has been, at best, given halfhearted reviews for its power and torque numbers, without mentioning its weight.
The much lighter V6T engine is projected to be a big improvement in those areas. The succeeding Audi S6 will exchange its V10 for an updated twin-turbocharged variant of the 4.2-liter V8. Audi will most likely make a similar move for the S8, leaving the V10 bi-turbo variant to the higher-performance R8 coming next year, and to the racing R8 GT presently being worked over by Audi racing expert Abt Sportsline. In two years' time, the V6 turbo will also get under the hood of the R4 mid-engine two-seater.
The base R8 will remain with the updated V8 to be observed in the succeeding S6. As for the R8 V12 TDI, it should go into production pretty much as IL drove it in prototype form early this year. Talks are going around concerning an R6 roadster to go in between the R4 and R8 and of the frequently spotted TT-RS street racer, also arriving anytime in 2009. Previously, as IL has reported, Audi's future RS4, RS6 and the latest RS5 will all weigh less and are all designed primarily for the U.S. market. "We're shooting for Porsches," said an engineer, in an interview with IL on condition of secrecy.
