Next-generation Subaru Impreza STI to receive diesel-powered model

For its next generation lineup, Subaru's Impreza STi will offer a diesel model and a petrol-powered variant too. This STi model is expected to arrive in 2012. It will be equipped with an upgraded version of the 2.0-litre turbodiesel offered in the current Impreza. With its flat four layout, it will make it easier for Subaru to preserve the STi's reputation for fine handling, while improving fuel economy. However, insiders say that Subaru won't offer turbocharged petrol engines just yet. One of those being considered is a downsized four-cylinder petrol unit that is likely based on the 1.5-litre flat four that powers base-model Imprezas. When it comes to hybrids, Subaru lags behind Mitsubishi. The company means for this technology to be used for the Impreza but it won't appear until about halfway through the lifecycle of the next-gen model's lifecycle. Like the Evo, the changes to the Impreza will result to a shake-up of the car's motorsport activities. The Impreza is anticipated to move to circuit racing instead of rallying.
