Next Honda Civic to be lighter, smaller and more fuel efficient

The next Honda Civic was originally designed to be bigger than the current model and was planned to rival Accords however, due to the changing world market, it will now be built to be small and efficient. Honda CEO Takanobu Ito said that the company is assessing all of its products in order to raise fuel mileage and lower cost. It's possible that the launch of the next Civic will be delayed since the change in plans with regards to the size arrived as designers had already solidified the next Civic.

Ito said that to cope, Honda is adding more manpower to hit its target. The problem with having a delay in the launching of the next Civic is that if it goes past its 5-year cycle, the entire Honda lineup would be affected, as the CR-V and Element rely on Civic architecture.

At Honda's current pace, the next generation Civic would be arriving as a 2011 model. The "Lehman Shock," as Ito refers to it, moved Honda to rethink its pricing approach. Ito said that the easiest option would be to make products cheaper, but the highest quality would have to be maintained. Ito emphasized that this applies to all models.
