Nissan and Showa Shell to develop quick charging system using solar panels

Nissan is partnering with Showa Shell to evaluate the possibility of quick charging systems that use solar energy to charge a bank of automotive-grade batteries. Various problems crop up with the requirement of doing 480V charging on a wide scale. First, there are almost no charging stations in existence today. Second, putting up public charging stations would put a significant load on the grid. To address these proactively, Nissan is working with Showa Shell to test its solar photovoltaic panels in conjunction with the Nissan's lithium ion batteries. The batteries would then be used to charge cars. If it works, the system would reduce the load required from the grid, eliminating one of the concerns of electric vehicles while also making the use of solar more practical.
