Nissan Motor Co. CEO Carlos Ghosn said that its hybrids will only be versions of existing models. In an interview with Automotive News, Ghosn has ruled out building a stand-alone hybrid similar to the Toyota Prius. He reasoned that Nissan has no intention to be the leader in hybrid technology and instead wants leadership on EVs. Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. are racking up sales with their dedicated hybrid-only models, the Prius and the Insight respectively.
Included in these company's goals is a plan to expand their hybrid offerings to smaller cars such as the Toyota Yaris and the Honda Fit. On the other hand, Nissan is banking on zero-emissions electric vehicles, such as its new Leaf hatchback. It is pursuing a minimalist approach to hybrids and has confined them to big cars. The first hybrid based on Nissan's in-house technology will be a hybrid version of the redesigned Infiniti M unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show.
