Nissan is introducing the Nissan NV200 London Taxi – a preview of what the London ‘black cab’ could be in the future. There are about 300,000 daily users in London who would surely be excited to know that the NV200 London Taxi offers drastically reduced CO2 outputs compared to the existing taxi models in compliance with the Air Quality strategy that Mayor Boris Johnson plans for London. Trials will soon start for the all-electric e-NV200 concept in the Capital. The launch of the Nissan NV200 London Taxi was attended by the Mayor as well as the disability groups and the influential London Taxi Drivers’ Association. The taxi versions of the NV200 have already been introduced in Tokyo. In fact, it was already selected as the exclusive New York City ‘Taxi of tomorrow’. The NV200 London Taxi isn’t the first time for Nissan to make a mark in the Capital’s taxi history. Nissan’s 2.7-litre TD27 diesel engine was picked out for the LTI FX4 ‘Fairway’ black cab, which was more reliable, faster, and more efficient.
This is the same engine that was used in the TX1, which is the successor to the Fairway. The Nissan NV200 London Taxi is both reliable and durable. It’s no wonder since it is based on Nissan’s multi-purpose NV200 compact van, which has received much recognition, which includes the International Van Of The Year award. The model was launched at the end of 2009 and has been presented to 40 countries, with sales of more than 100,000 units throughout the globe. Five adults can be accommodated inside the Nissan NV200 London Taxi. A rear bench can seat three people while two will be on rear-facing, fold-down seats. Room for luggage was created when the front passenger seat was removed.
One highlight to this taxi is its sliding passenger doors, which allow for easy opening and closing. Since they don’t swing out, it’s safer for pedestrians, cyclists and other vehicles. It’s believed that the diesel version of the Nissan NV200 London Taxi would be priced competitively below the new TX4, which is the current model of the London Taxi Company. It will be offered via a designated ‘specialist’ Nissan dealer. Furthermore, Nissan’s NV200 offers much improved running costs compared to alternative London cabs. The highly efficient 1.5 dCi 89 HP EuroV, 6-speed manual drivetrain on the model is capable of returning 53.3mpg on a combined cycle. This means that it is nearly 50% more frugal than the most efficient TX4, with its combined cycle figure of 35.3mpg.
