At the Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan has revealed the Leaf Electric Vehicle — the first of its zero emission vehicles that it plans to release in the years to come. CEO Carlos Ghosn said that there will definitely be more EVs in the future.

He said that the Leaf EV is slated to be launched in early 2010 and that an electric version of the NV200 van will follow later next year. The unnamed source also said that a production version of the Nissan Land Glider Concept is possible as well. In addition, Nissan has confirmed that an electric Infiniti is in the plans but has yet to give more details. Nissan calls the LEAF a huge accomplishment and one that all of its employees can be proud of. Continued after the jump!

Ghosn said that Nissan has been toiling to create a car that doesn’t have merely reduced emissions but one that has zero emissions. He calls it a “first step” in an exciting journey “for people all over the world, for Nissan and for the industry.” The car is powered with laminated compact lithium-ion batteries that can develop 90 kW, while its electric motors produce 80 kW/280 Nm of torque.

On a full charge, the batteries provide a range of 100 miles (160 km). It also features regenerative braking systems designed by the parent manufacturer. Masato INOUE, Product Chief Designer, said that Nissan had aimed to create the world’s first, medium-size, practical EV that is affordable. He described that the styling will identify not only Nissan LEAF but also the owner as a participant in the “new era of zero-emission mobility.”
