Nissan to build a Nano-like small and cheap car

Seemingly following the trend that has brought success to India's Tata Nano, Nissan is bent on capturing this market by building its own small, inexpensive car. Nissan reportedly has plans to launch a new small car platform in Thailand , India and China starting in March 2010. In development since 2005, the new vehicle architecture is called V (as in Versatile). According to drive.com.au, the car will have 18-percent fewer parts than current Nissan compacts. To bring down costs further, as many components as possible will be sourced from local areas. However, the project will only be considered a success if it gets extremely high sales. Nissan targets one million vehicles per year by 2013. This number represents nearly a third of all Nissan's sold in the last three months. Sales in Europe and the United States are planned to begin as early as 2011. [via autoblog]
