About 400 temporary new jobs will be created by Nissan Motor Co. as it proceeds with its plan for Britain's biggest car plant to meet rising demand for its best-selling model. Nissan, Japan's third-biggest carmaker, said that sales of its Qashqai crossover vehicle were better than expected. In fact, Nissan will require extra staff to boost production at its factory in Sunderland, northeast England. Trevor Mann, Nissan's senior vice president for manufacturing, Europe, said that Qashqai continues to do well despite a depressed market. The company realizes now that there is a need for an additional shift, according to UK Business Secretary Peter Mandelson. He also announced the presence of 2.3 billion pounds ($3.74 billion) of loans to help Britain's car industry. He wanted people to look at the new jobs provided as evidence that the economy is returning to growth. [via autonews - sub. required]
