Nissan to develop the new Titan pickup without a partner

Ever since a deal to team up with Chrysler Group fell apart last year, the Titan's future had been in limbo. But during an interview last Monday at the Detroit Auto Show, Larry Dominique, Nissan North America's vice president for product planning, confirmed that the next-generation Titan will be built in-house. In August, Chrysler threw out plans to share vehicles with Nissan Motor Co., including a pickup.
A Nissan spokesman had explained that the company was exploring options and is seeking another automaker as a partner. The plan had been for the next-generation Titan to be based on the Dodge Ram pickup and to go on sale in 2012 model year. Dominique clarified that the next-generation Titan will arrive later than it would have been with Chrysler but no timetable was mentioned.
He said that the company would be focusing on a better fuel economy. Last year, the Titan faced severe competition from the Ram, the Ford F-series, and the Chevy Silverado. Compared to 2008 figures, Titan sales dropped 44% to 19,042 vehicles; Ram sales plunged 28% to 177,268; F-series fell 20% to 413,625; and Silverado dropped 32% to 316,544.
