Since late December, Nissan Motor Co. has delivered 471 Leaf battery-electric cars to the United States. Nissan is aiming to boost shipments in this market. In a statement, Nissan said that it has made its first shipment of the lithium-ion battery models to the U.S. after the March 11 earthquake in Japan. Nissan said that there are about 20,000 customers waiting to receive the Leaf vehicles.
Nissan promised that all the initial orders will be filled within months. At the New York International Auto Show, Carlos Tavares, chairman of Nissan's Americas operation, said that Nissan Leaf deliveries are expected to grow “from the few hundreds, to the many thousands."
He claims that all the current customer orders will be accomplished by the end of summer. Nissan has encountered obstacles in the deliveries of the Leaf. Nissan has had to repair a software glitch in the first batch and the disaster in Japan has led to production delays.
