Nissan will be unveiling its electric car in Yokohama on August 2. The Japanese manufacturer will put on display its concept car during the opening of its new world headquarters. A more production-based version will be bared at Tokyo Motor Show in October. Production will begin in late 2010 in Japan while full production is expected in Japan and in the US in 2012.

Nissan said however that the zero-emissions car could also be made available to other nations. A lithium ion battery pack is set to power the car and its rear-drive hybrids, which will emerge in 2010. Nissan also intends to use the battery pack in its future fuel cell models. The manufacturer is moving full speed ahead with lithium ion technology, which it has been developing since the early 1990s. Even then, Nissan was adamant that Li-Ion would prove to perform better than nickel metal hydride, which Toyota Prius and Honda Insight have. Dr. Hideaki Horie, engineering director of Nissan’s Next Generation Battery Group in Kanagawa, said that Li-Ion “offers clear advantages of power, range and weight.” He asserted his confidence in the “robustness” of the car’s battery. Dr. Horie had worked both with Sony and with NEC on lithium ion technology, so this means he knows what he is talking about.
