NYPD takes the green way with the Nissan Altima Hybrid

Altima Hybrid Police Car

There are reports stating that the New York Police Department will start a pilot program by replacing 40 of their old cruisers with the new Nissan Altima Hybrid cars which involves a $1.1 million initial investment. There are about 18 of these gasoline-saving and pollution-reducing hybrids that have already been setup as marked police cars while another 20 as unmarked ones. A further two units will be disguised as regular yellow taxi cabs. If this venture will be successful, there will be lots of gasoline-dollars saved. The current police cruisers consume gas at 16 to 18mpg in the city, while the new Altima Hybrids will have around 35mpg. The implications to the economy because these are Japanese cars (although assembled in Smyrna, TN) is uncertain and also the implications to the police officers who have been so used to their older cruisers is left to the imagination.
