2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 4MATIC
Many of you folks were waiting for it, now its finally here: this is the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 4MATIC, a new model from the German manufacturer equipped with permanent all-wheel-drive system! As you may know already, most of the Mercedes-Benz passenger cars are equipped with a rear-wheel drive system but the new E-Class promises to deliver more safety than ever with the 4MATIC system, featuring a 45:55 torque split between the front and rear axles and a multi-disc limited-slip centre differential with a basic locking torque of 50 Nm.
But this is not all! The system is also able to shift the drive torque between the front and rear axles, varying the split between 30:70 and 70:30 as the road conditions dictate. Of course, the new system is helped by other safety systems such as ESP, 4ETS or ASR electronic control which means that this model will be sticked to the road even if this is covered by ice and snow.
Although many of you would think that the 4MATIC system would increase the fuel consumption, Mercedes-Benz says that there is a small increase but only between 0.2 and 0.6 litres more per hundred kilometres than on a com-parable model with conventional drive. The comfort remains the same, due to the highly sophisticated Direct Control suspension with adaptive shock absorbers, an intelligent body design with excellent rigidity, plus enhanced seats which are also available with massage and climate control functions.
Because the interior climate is very important in the winter, Mercedes-Benz offers the Thermotronic luxury automatic climate control (this new system includes a pollutant sensor which can automatically switch to recirculation mode if it detects any sudden increase in the carbon monoxide or nitrogen oxide levels in the outside air). The standard E-Class comes with Thermatic, a two-zone automatic climate control system.
