Prior to its world introduction at the New York Auto Show in just a few days, the brand new 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG has already garnered a reader's choice award for best sports car from the German publication Sport Auto. Ten days ago, Mercedes-Benz released a teaser photo for the latest E63 and today, somewhat ahead of schedule, they released the full details of the package. Besides the new bumper, alloy wheels and large cross-drilled brake discs shown in the teaser photo, the latest image released exhibits the car's new E-Class range likeness, together with its unique features, such as an aggressive full body package and broader, more intentional posture.
Prototypes of the E-Class have been tested by Mercedes and the engineers of its in-house tuner AMG to the extent that they have even recruited Mika Hakkinen, the former McLaren F1 ace and race driver Klaus Ludwig to fine-tune the car. Even with the present unease concerning global warming and the likelihood of the cessation of the battle for horsepower between in-house tuners of Germany, the E63 will be keeping its powerful hand-crafted 6.2-liter V8, while the rest of the mechanical pack is expected to receive some major revisions.
The power output of the E63 has been raised to 518bhp (386kW) and torque to 465lb-ft. Power is channeled to the wheels via a 7-speed MCT dual-clutch transmission, giving the sedan an acceleration rating of 4.4 seconds from standstill to 60mph, and a top speed electronically limitd to 155mph (250km/h). These numbers are almost the same as the previous model. AMG will be concentrating on enhancing handling and the strength of the chassis, and with the latest C63 AMG providing a number of features.
However, even with the boost in power, the car has become 12 percent more efficient with 18.6mpg fuel economy rating. However, the transmission is the true technical update with four driving modes available: "C" which stands for Controlled Efficiency, "S" for Sport, "S+," Sport Plus and "M" for Manual. These modes can be selected through a rotary electronic switch in the AMG DRIVE UNIT. With the partial suppression of individual cylinders by interrupting ignition and injection during gearshifts under full load allows the transmission faster gear changes. For instance, in the "M" mode the MCT changes gears in 100 millionth of a second. Compared to the regular E-Class, the sportier AMG version receives a broader 56mm front track and a unique steering ratio and also a MacPherson strut and multi-link dynamic suspension. The E63 will be available for sale soon after its debut at the New York Auto Show and the Estate wagon variant will hit showrooms in 2010.
