Official: 2010 Subaru Legacy capable of achieving 31mpg on the highway

In spite of the seeming unattractiveness of the 2010 Legacy, Subaru has almost been unaffected by the crisis that is shaking other carmakers and has in fact gathered loyal followers in the process. However, with the release of the EPA's fuel economy ratings today, Subaru's followers may have to brace themselves for some bad news. Subaru's sportier and more potent 2.5 GT and 3.6R variants provide noticeably below average fuel efficiency at only 18mpg in the city and 25mpg on the highway with a combined efficiency of only 21mpg. These figures are only marginally better than some SUVs and not quite competitive in its class.
These figures are likely to come down once the vehicle is in the real world. The 2.5i that comes with the six-speed manual transmission is rated at 19mpg and 27mpg in the city and highway, respectively for a combined efficiency rating of 22mpg, is not enough to paint a better picture. The only good news in the Subaru line is the 2.5i equipped with CVT transmission that has a fuel consumption rate of 23mpg in the city and 31mpg on the highway for a 26mpg combined. These numbers are sufficient to place it in the upper half of its class, especially when taking into account its size, power and all-wheel-drive capability. The carmaker claims that it is the most efficient 2010 mid-size all-wheel-drive sedan offered in US markets today.
