2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet
Official details about the 2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet, which will soon be unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show next month, have been released. The 2011 E-Class Convertible replaces the CLK convertible and comes with a choice of powerplants: a 3.5-liter V6 capable of generating 268 hp and 258 lb-feet of torque in E350 guise or a 5.5-liter V8 producing 382 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque in the E550 cab. Instead of a retractable hardtop like some of its rivals, the E-Class Convertible has a 0.9-inch cloth roof that expands its capacity considerably. When the top is up, the trunk is spacious with almost 14 cubic feet of space. But when the top is dropped and stowed behind the rear passengers, it leaves only a little over three cubic feet.
Similar to the latest Audi A5 convertible, the 2011 E-Class Convertible also has a pass-through underneath the roof’s enclosure that should make bringing along longer parcels a bit easier. What’s remarkable about the 2011 convertible E-Class is its new AirCap system, which includes a 2.4-inch wind deflector that extends from the windshield, along with a draft-stop mounted behind the rear seats. Mercedes claims that this limits the amount of wind intrusion into the passenger compartment up to speeds of 100 mph. This should be of value in particular to those who have a problem with the wind messing up their hair as well as those who want to keep noise to a minimum. Other modifications include the Mercedes Airscarf, which blows warm air around the neck of the front seat passengers (originally seen on the SL) and Mercedes’ first application of head airbags in a convertible. Unfortunately, it won’t be around until May so we’ll all just have to be patient.
