Official: AMG launching high-performance diesel by 2011

2008 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG

Volker Mornhinweg, the boss of Mercedes' tuning division, has announced that AMG plans to open a diesel version "within three years,". Mornhinweg described the prospective high-performance diesel as an upgrade version of the renowned AMG Hammer, a gas-engined W124 E-class. "This car will be the Super Hammer," Mornhinweg said. Unlike the CL or S-class, the AMG diesel will not be a large coupe or saloon since the AMG boss has previously announced that he favored the concept of a more dimunitive, lighter and more efficient vehicle. This will probably mean a C-class diesel, like the C320, is in line for the AMG treatment. The concept of diesel AMGs will unavoidably extend to other Mercedes versions. The new E-class will most probably end up as an AMG diesel. The latest high-performance model will not be the first diesel-engined Benz to sport an AMG badge. That position was earned by the C30 AMG, back in 2002, which was founded on a Sport Coupe.
