Official: Bmw and Saab announced an agreement for the supply of engines

2011 Saab 9-3 Sedan

As expected, as we announced here, Saab officially announced today that it reached an agreement with Bmw for the supply of engines to be used in the next-generation Saab vehicles. This means that Bmw will supply Saab with 4-cylinder 1.6 litre turbocharged petrol engines from 2012, when the revamped 9-3 will be introduced. According to the latest reports, it appears that Saab is also in talks with Bmw in order to use the MINI Countryman platform for its smaller 9-2 model.

Saab Chairman Victor Muller said that this new model will be inspired by the tear-drop shaped Saab 92 model that was in production between 1949 and 1956. It is expected to make its debut in 2014, and it will be designed by Jason Castriota, the U.S. designer known for creating the Ferrari P4/5 and Maserati GranTurismo.

Victor Muller, Chairman of Saab Automobile, said: “This is a major step forward for Saab on our journey to becoming a profitable independent premium car maker. In line with our strategy, we will continue to capitalise on our own engineering expertise while also working with the very best partners. This relationship will enable both parties to explore further opportunities in the future.

Ian Robertson, Executive Sales and Marketing Director of BMW, added: “As part of our Strategy Number ONE we are continuing to expand our powertrain sales business worldwide. Today’s agreement marks another important milestone along this route. Our engines have a clear lead over the competition when it comes to fuel consumption, emissions and performance and we are delighted to support Saab with our engine expertise.”
