Official: GMAC becomes Ally

Starting August, the "Ally" name will be used in most of Ally Financial Inc.'s consumer and dealer-related auto finance operations in North America. The shift all but ends the GMAC brand name on the continent after 91 years of auto lending. GMAC changed its name to Ally Financial Inc. last May. GMAC, which stood for General Motors Acceptance Corp., has been trying to distance itself from GM since 2006 when it was spun off.
The companies that the Ally brand will support include: GM, Chrysler Group, Saab, Thor Industries and Fiat Mexico.
In addition, Ally's auto financing operations outside North America will continue to operate under the GMAC brand while the company assesses if it will use the new brand in other regions. The shift in the name won't apply to the Suzuki dealer network. Ally is the preferred lender for Suzuki. When GMAC revealed that it will use the Ally name at the corporate level and probably its dealer and retail operations, it thought about continuing the use of GMAC for the products it supplies to GM dealers.
