SL63 AMG F1 Safety Car

The 2009 Formula One season will be guaranteed maximum safety by the SL 63 AMG, as the Official F1 Safety Car, and the C63 AMG Estate, as the Official F1 Medical Car. The performance brand of Mercedes-Benz will be on duty with the two specifically prepared high-performance cars at all 17 races of the new season Formula 1, beginning with a first appearance at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne that will commence on March 27 and finish on March 29. The cars were developed, produced and serviced by the experts of the AMG PERFORMANCE STUDIO.

When the race is under the threat of accidents, unfavorable weather states or other unsafe conditions, the Official F1 Safety Car is deployed. Driving the remarkable SL 63 AMG is the 37-year-old German Bern Maylander. After getting instructions from the management of the race, the former DTM driver must lead the Formula 1 pack and safely guide them around the circuit. The Safety Car requires fast lap times or else the F1 engines of the fastest racecars in the world will overheat and their tires and brakes will greatly cool down.

Like last year, the role of the Official F1 Safety Car for this year's season is going to be played by the Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG. Its remarkable driving dynamics are essential for its highly challenging role, thus, it comes with the AMG 6.3-liter V8 unit which can produce 386kW (525hp) and provide a sprint rate of standstill to 100km/h in just 4.4 seconds.

To help the high-revving, naturally ventilated AMG engine breathe more freely, AMG installed a newly designed sport exhaust system that is fitted with bigger diameter pipes and special silencers at the rear. The newly designed AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission with column shift guarantees excellent driving dynamics with a lightning fast 100 millisecond gear change capability.
