Official: Mercedes-Benz unveils new V6 and V8 engines

Nowadays, consumers don't look at power alone when deciding on what car to purchase. More and more consumers also consider fuel economy and emissions level. In response to these changes, Mercedes-Benz has introduced two new engines that offer improved performance and economy. The 3.5-liter V-6 engine boasts of gains of 38hp and 24% fuel economy. Meanwhile, the V-8 engine raises output by 43hp and fuel economy by 22%. These improvements place the new 3.5-liter V-6 at 306hp/272 pound-feet and the new 4.7-liter twin-turbo V-8 at 435hp/516 pound-feet. The current 3.5-liter V-6 delivers 268hp while the naturally aspirated 5.5-liter V-8 can generate 382hp. In particular, the V-6 is capable of 30.9 mpg, and the V-8 can achieve 24.7 mpg.
These figures are believed to be EU combined figures, but Mercedes-Benz has yet to confirm this. The V8 has 442 pound-feet of torque that's available from 1,600 rpm and full torque that comes on at 1,800 rpm. The V-6 has a maximum torque from 3,500-5,250 rpm. Mercedes-Benz gets both power and efficiency out of its upgraded engines through several methods. One is through direct injection. The new twin-turbo V-8's forced induction also boosts performance and economy, while the V-6 drops its 90-degree layout for a new 60-degree V. Thermal efficiency of the engines are also improved via the utilization of multiple injection and multiple ignition. However, the primary attraction in these engines is the stop-start. The new mainstream V-8 and V-6 engines are added to Mercedes-Benz range, which already includes the new M157 AMG 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-8, which leverages the same core technologies to produce 571hp and 664 pound-feet of torque while still being capable of over 22 mpg. This engine will be featured in the S63 AMG that comes out this year.
