Opel's car assembly plant in Antwerp, Belgium, will stop production in the next few months, according to Opel CEO Nick Reilly who spoke at a news conference. The reason he gave for the closure is for Opel to keep going and for it to have a "sustainable future." Reilly said that the company intends to eventually sell the land that the factory occupies. Reilly also said that unless an alternative can be found through negotiations with the unions, the closure would be completed by June or July. He asserted that parent General Motors Co.'s moves to find an alternative option to avoid closure had been unsuccessful. Jan Van Aggelpoel of the ACV union said that the plant will remain open until June 2010, after which, the union will consider other possibilities. [via autonews - sub. required]
