Official: Peugeot confirms small SUV based on the 208

Peugeot HR1 Concept

Peugeot is the latest automaker to see the potential of small SUVs and crossovers by making the announcement that it is working on a crossover that will be positioned below the 4008. The automakers that don’t have an entry in this segment are currently scrambling to offer at least one in this area. Peugeot has produced SUV in the past but it had limited this to the Mercedes-based P4 from the 1980s, and the more recent Mitsubishi -based 4007.

Another Mitsubishi-based SUV that’s referred to as the 4008 is scheduled to go up against smaller offerings such as the Opel-badged version of the upcoming Buick Encore and the Nissan Juke. Peugeot is adamant that its platform will be entirely new model built and will be designed exclusively by Peugeot.

The internal name for this crossover is called the A94 internally but if Peugeot stays true to tradition, it will be called the 2008 when it hits the market. It will likely borrow styling cues from the HR1 Concept presented at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. According to a report, the arrival of the 2008 indicates that Peugeot will not create a station wagon version of the 208. Just the 206 and the 207 were offered as station wagons. Notably, no model was ever successful. [source: LeftLaneNews]
