Official: Porsche returning to the Detroit Auto Show

As you may know already, Porsche was seen as the biggest absence from the Detroit Auto Show, but it appears that things will change for next year, as the German manufacturer will return to the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, after a three-year absence. For those who don’t know, Porsche withdrew from the American car show back in 2008 because it wanted to find “more personal, direct ways to reach out and communicate to its potential customer base.”
Since then, Porsche hasn’t show any vehicles here. Still, in the first eight months of this year, Porsche sold 15,719 vehicles in the U.S., an increase of 23.5% from a year earlier. Porsche plans to launch a brand new 911 model next year, which will use a new engine as well as a seven-speed (?!?) manual transmission. “We’re very excited about it,” said Bill Perkins, co-chairman of the 2011 North American International Auto Show . “The demand for space is very strong. People see the market coming back.”
Mitsubishi, Nissan and Suzuki have also been absent from the Detroit Auto Show, but Perkins did say that talks continued with several companies. Still, he declined to give any names. “We’re still talking to several companies,” Perkins said. “We still have flexibility to rearrange floor space if we need to.” [via freep]
