Full details of Toyota's new Auris hybrid, which will officially be launched in concept form at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week, have been released. Production of the first hybrid model to be built in Europe will begin in the second half of 2010 at the Burnaston plant in Derbyshire. It shares its hybrid powertrain with the third-generation Prius, which was launched just this summer. The hybrid car has a 97bhp 1.8-litre petrol engine as well as nickel-metal hydride batteries and an electric motor. It can run on electric power solely for up to 1.25 miles at speeds of up to 31mph. Acceleration from 0-60mph will take around 10 seconds, while its CO2 emissions will be sub 100g/km. To keep its drag coefficient down to 0.28, the Auris has been given some aerodynamic tweaks. These include a front end designed to optimize airflow and maximize fuel efficiency as well as flat corners on the front and rear bumpers.
The ride height is lower by 20mm compared to the standard Auris. Additional modifications include underbody panels and a rear diffuser to help channel airflow under the body, turbulence-reducing 18-inch alloy wheels and low rolling resistance tires, as well as a larger rear spoiler. Making use of solar power technology, the car has panels on the roof to charge the batteries. Solar panels are also fitted on the dashboard to help charge mobile phones or after market sat-nav systems. LED lights feature at the front and the rear. The car's interior gets blue Gaucholino leather seats with light blue accent stitching. Meanwhile, the center console and side air vents have a pearl white finish. The instrument cluster has hybrid blue illumination and alloy pedals also feature. The car has full thickness window glazing. An acoustic windscreen reduces wind noise at cruising speeds while extensive soundproofing under the bonnet keeps engine noise to a minimum.
