Once more, Toyota has overtaken GM to become the world’s current largest car maker. Although Toyota and GM have been trading the primary spot for some time, what did GM in was its 11 percent sales drop in 2008 as compared to Toyota’s meager 4 percent.

These figures represent for GM a total sale of 8.36 million units to Toyota’s 8.97 million, a gap totaling 616,000 units. Domestic markets for both companies also showed a similar scenario with GM suffering a 22.7 percent drop to Toyota’s 15 percent. Toyota suffered its first decline in sales in ten years after a record sale of 9.37 million units in 2007
