Official: Upcoming Mazda RX-7 and RX-9 still under development

An insider at the Hiroshima headquarters of Mazda has confirmed that a new RX-7 is forthcoming although there were no disclosures on the date. Mazda's attempt to promote the Renesis powerplant in more than tens years point to the fact that the carmaker is not yet ready to let go of the rotary powerplant just yet. The informant said that the development of the new RX-7 is progressing and that there is a great likelihood of the next-generation sports car will come with a frong-midship-mounted 16X rotary powerplant with 210kW (270hp) with the total absence of any kind of forced induction.
The latest 16X powerplant is said to be patterned after the 800cc x 2 arrangement in contrast to the 13B's 654cc x 2 layout. Even with the raised capacity, fuel consumption is enhanced by 20 percent, a figure that will improve the previous image of the rotary engines image as a gas-guzzler and high-emissions powerplant.
The new RX-7 will come with a new dual-cluctch 6-speed manual, equipped with a feature that will permit users to pre-determine at what rpm the clutches engaged. A brand new chassis enabled Mazda to save 100kg (220lb) lowering the total weight of the car to 1197kg. Not enough details are available for the RX-8 and the RX-9 which could be hydrogen-propelled, suffice it to say that this point that both projects are moving forward.
