Official: Volkswagen Golf R uncovered in Frankfurt
Volkswagen pushed hard for its new model and came out with the company’s quickest version ever sent to production, the Golf R. The attractive speedster received a new hydraulic 4-wheel drive system and is capable of 270 hp reaching 100km/h in just 5.7 seconds with a top speed limited at 250km.
If you want a higher performance you can choose for the DSG dual-clutch transmission which will make the car fly to 100 km/h in 5.5 sec. Although featuring an increased power the company’s officials affirm that the new R delivers higher efficiency, translated in a fuel economy of 33.2mpg, over 20% improved, and CO2 emissions are 199g/km. The Golf R is powered by a re-worked 2.0L, 4-cylinder EA113 engine, the powerplant fitted also in the last-generation GTI and the current Audi S3. The upgraded engine features a new head gasket, uprated pistons and conrods, and high-pressure injectors, as well as an upgraded turbocharger and a revised intercooler. In terms of looks the new Golf R received new front and rear bumpers, LED running lights, a gloss black rear diffuser, central exhausts, sill extensions, xenon headlights and unique tail-lights. At the interior the car features Alcantara seats, gloss black highlights and blue instrument needles and under the hood it gets only upgraded components such as lowered suspension (by 25mm), a modified ESP programme with two additional settings for track use, and more responsive steering.
Considering its start price of €32.000, the sales plans of Volkswagen aim a total combined sales of 500 three and five-door examples per year in the UK. The Golf R is expected to be released to the market in October and the first deliveries to be made starting with January.
