Official: Volkswagen Golf R uncovered in Frankfurt

2010 Volkswagen Golf RVolkswagen pushed hard for its new model and came out with the company’s quickest version ever sent to production, the Golf R. The attractive speedster received a new hydraulic 4-wheel drive system and is capable of 270 hp reaching 100km/h in just 5.7 seconds with a top speed limited at 250km.

If you want a higher performance you can choose for the DSG dual-clutch transmission which will make the car fly to 100 km/h in 5.5 sec. Although featuring an increased power the company’s officials affirm that the new R delivers higher efficiency, translated in a fuel economy of 33.2mpg, over 20% improved, and CO2 emissions are 199g/km. The Golf R is powered by a re-worked 2.0L, 4-cylinder EA113 engine, the powerplant fitted also in the last-generation GTI and the current Audi S3. The upgraded engine features a new head gasket, uprated pistons and conrods, and high-pressure injectors, as well as an upgraded turbocharger and a revised intercooler. In terms of looks the new Golf R received new front and rear bumpers, LED running lights, a gloss black rear diffuser, central exhausts, sill extensions, xenon headlights and unique tail-lights. At the interior the car features Alcantara seats, gloss black highlights and blue instrument needles and under the hood it gets only upgraded components such as lowered suspension (by 25mm), a modified ESP programme with two additional settings for track use, and more responsive steering.

Considering its start price of €32.000, the sales plans of Volkswagen aim a total combined sales of 500 three and five-door examples per year in the UK. The Golf R is expected to be released to the market in October and the first deliveries to be made starting with January.
