Official: Vw Amarok SUV on hold

2010 Vw AmarokProduction of the Volkswagen Amarok SUV won‚Äôt start anytime soon as plans were shelved to see how the market for this vehicle develops. An Autocar report says that VW chose to wait because it considers the SUV market to be already saturated. Volkswagen Group financial boss Klaus-Dieter Schurmann said that it makes the Touareg, the Cayenne, the Q7, the Q5 and Tiguan ‚ five cars in the same class. Even Schurmann questions if VW really needs another in this class. Specifications released back in December state that the truck will come first in a four-door version with "double cab." Continued after the jump! The single cab version is due to arrive in the first half of 2011. Two engines are offered: a 2.0 TDI with common rail injection engine, which develops 163 PS and 400 Nm of torque at 1,500 rpm; and a four cylinder TDI, which will be introduced in the first half of 2010. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, which will be the single one available for both engines. The power to these engines will be taken to the ground by the use of three drive concepts: full-time all-wheel drive, switchable all-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive. The base version of the Amarok is featured with rear-wheel drive. VW had originally planned to launch the car in South America this year, with South Africa and Australia to follow. Europe was supposed to get the car in the second half of 2010. 2010 Vw Amarok 2010 Vw Amarok 2010 Vw Amarok 2010 Vw Amarok [via autocar]
