British sources say that the Astra GTC Paris Concept seen at the Paris Motor Show last month will become the three-door Opel Astra Sri, instead of the next generation Astra VXR. What this means is that the VXR will be even more powerful than the 300 hp Astra SRi. Vice president of design Mark Adams assures those who worry that the real car won’t be as cool as the concept. He explained that as what is proven by the Insignia and Meriva, the carmaker can bring dramatic cars from concept to production.
He pointed out that the final Astra three-door will be one such example. The features that won’t be carried over to the production version though would be the very expensive candy-red paint and the 21-inch wheel set. The cabin will be largely unchanged from the Paris Show concept.
The hot hatch gets a luxurious feel due to the Alcantara and leather on the seats. Power will be derived from a small, twin-scroll turbocharged engine, 2.0l in displacement, mated to a six-speed manual transmission. To cope with the power increase, the vehicle is fitted with the newly redesigned chassis.
