Opel could build a minicar with an automaker partner

An Opel minicar is currently being considered for production. Alain Visser, Opel's head of sales and marketing, confirms that Opel is considering entering the minicar segment but for it to remain profitable, it will have to find a partner to help in the manufacture. In an interview with Automotive News, Visser said that the minicar segment is the "most difficult segment in the market to make money." That is why many automakers join forces. The evidence of this merging is everywhere. The Ford Ka and Fiat 500 ride on similar platforms and are built in the same facility in Poland. For the Aygo, 107, and C1, Toyota partnered with Peugeot and Citroen, respectively. Opel has come up with minicar concepts in the past; the latest was the Trixx shown at the 2004 Geneva motor show. However, none of those concepts reached production. Opel's chairman, Carl-Peter Forster, said that at the earliest, Opel would seek to compete in the segment by 2012.
