Opel to launch its largest ever product offensive

On the 150th anniversary of Opel/Vauxhall next year, a barrage of products will be introduced. In fact, this is the automaker’s “largest ever product offensive,” according to Alain Visser, head of marketing and sales. When interviewed by Automotive News Europe at the brand's headquarters in Ruesselsheim, Germany, Visser said that the General Motors Co. division will launch at least six new vehicles in 2012.

The Zafira Tourer minivan will be launched in January while the Combo light commercial van is set to make an appearance in February. In the summer, three variants of the Astra compact model will arrive.

Meanwhile, a small SUV will come in the autumn. Soon to be released as new Astra models are the face-lifted three- and five-door hatchbacks, a four-door sedan and a high performance version that are offered under the OPC badge. In early 2012, Opel/Vauxhall will start to sell a minicar dubbed as the Junior.

This car, which is described by Opel as a "lifestyle" model, is targeting the iPod generation. The final name of this car has yet to be decided though. Later this year, two Opel models – the Astra GTC and the Ampera electric car – will be launched.

Visser said that Opel and its UK unit Vauxhall are expected to attain sales of more than 1.28 million vehicles in 2011, an increase from 1.22 million last year. As a result, it retains its position as the No. 2 GM brand in terms of worldwide sales, after Chevrolet. [source: Autonews]
