Opel/Vauxhall’s new minicar to make its debut in early 2013

The city car segment will soon receive a new entry – the Junior – from Vauxhall/Opel, General Motors Co.’s European unit, according to an Autocar report. Set to go on sale in early 2013, the Junior is expected to rival the MINI and the Fiat 500. The Autocar report refers to Vauxhall but it’s believed to apply to Opel too. So far, no disguised Juniors have been spied but the model is said to be in the late development stages.
Opel and Vauxhall have a formidable task ahead of them as MINI and the Fiat 500 have a cult status aside from offering premium quality and having the support of an impressive marketing scheme and heritage. This segment is also quite crowded as the other contenders include the Suzuki Splash and the Ford Ka. There were reports that Opel’s Trixx concept will enter production but plans to launch the car were put on hold when GM entered bankruptcy and talks then started for plans to sell Opel and Vauxhall.
The Junior will be 3.7 meters long, slightly shorter than the MINI Cooper (3.9 meters long). It will feature a four-seater configuration with access via two doors. The Opel design studio in Russelsheim, Germany, is responsible for the Junior’s design, which will be funky and will have many curves and bumps to achieve a modern, urban chic appearance. Its interior will have a similar city-friendly appeal and there will be plenty of colors and options to choose from.
