Within five years, Opel will launch an electric vehicle, a small SUV, a minicar and hybrid models. GM Europe head and Opel CEO Nick Reilly said this is part of a campaign to "overhaul and freshen" its product line. Reilly added that in the next three years, we should expect sales of a pure electric car to begin. Rather than basing the electric car on an existing vehicle, the first model will be new. However, Reilly said that existing carswill be getting electric engines sometime in the future as well.

In addition, the entry-level model Agila, which is being built in cooperation with Suzuki Motor Corp., would get a successor even though rival Volkswagen AG was taking a stake in Suzuki.

In an interview with Germany's Auto Motor und Sport magazine, Reilly said that all existing projects with GM will be continued. He also asserted his personal belief that there is room for two models in the segment. One is positioned more practically than the Agila while the other comes from the sporty and lifestyle side and will be its future mini. [via autonews - sub. required]
