The most potent natural gas-powered vehicle opens in December when Opel introduces its first Compressed Natural Gas compact van outfitted with a turbo-charger at the Bologna auto show which will be held on December 5 to 14 of the current year. The latest Zafira 1.6 CNG Turbo can generate 150 hp and reach a peak speed of 200 km/h but utilizes only 5.3 kg of natural gas for every 100 km in the MVEG cycle, discharging just 144 g/km of Carbon Dioxide. That means and additional 60 percent more power for only a difference of 6 grams in emissions in contrast to the naturally aspirated version.

The latest Zafira 1.6 CNG Turbo will become available early next year. With this newest model, Opel once more provides environment-friendly driving without sacrificing performance. And driving a seven-seater does not have to be expensive either. The Zafira 1.6 CNG is a clean fuel vehicle and is less expensive to drive. In Germany, the rate for 100 kilometers is only 5.3 Euros. Typically, the cost of driving a CNG is estimated at 50 percent lower than a car of the same category running on gas.

In the long run the CNG will also remain cheaper compared to other fueled vehicles because of the commitment of governments in Europe to promote CNG vehicles through tax support systems. In 2001 Opel initiated the CNG propulsion with the ground-breaking MonovalentPlus technology, in which the motor is enhanced to largely function on natural gas, but could also operate on gasoline. The Zafira CNG Turbo 1.6-liter motor is intended to run on natural gas, bio-methane or any combination of the two.

The unit is offered with unique pistons, valves and valve seats, including separate injection systems for natural gas and gasoline. In gas mode alone, the vehicle can travel up to 370 km, while the 14-liter reserve gasoline tank provides an extra range of 150 km for the highest adaptability. A peak torque of 210 Nm at just 2.300 rpm will guarantee lots of power in all kinds of situations.

Because of the intelligently designed underfloor configuration of the four gas tanks around the rear axle, the Zafira's interior totally retains all its benefits in terms of adaptability and space. Similar to its sister versions, the 1.6 CNG Turbo shows off the special Flex7 seating system, allowing the interior to be quickly transformed from a seven-seater to a two-seater without any complex procedure of taking out the seats.
