As of Wednesday, a little over 450 rejected General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group rejected dealerships had given notice of their intention to file arbitration claims seeking reinstatement, according to an American Arbitration Association official. Dealer lawyers estimate that by the deadline on Jan. 25, about 800 to 1,000 notices will be submitted out of about 2,789 GM and Chrysler dealerships that are eligible to seek a restoration of their franchises.
Overseeing the arbitration is India Johnson, a senior vice president with the association, who stated that she has "seen no letup" and that many notices are coming in every hour. The number of claims has more than doubled since Jan. 15, when 168 GM dealership notices had been submitted. Dealer lawyers say that a much smaller but indefinite number of Chrysler claims also were filed. Johnson declined to provide a current breakdown between GM and Chrysler dealerships.
