Audi SQ5 TDI is ready to face the competition… with a biturbo diesel engine

Article by Christian A., on June 15, 2012

With the occasion of the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, Audi revealed the SQ5 TDI. That’s right, we have a hot diesel on the new Q5. Boosted by turbochargers, the 3.0-liter TDI engine delivers an impressive 230 kW (313 hp) and 650 Nm (479.42 lb-ft) of torque between 1,450 and 2,800 rpm.

As a result, it can push the car from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 5.1 seconds and to a top speed of zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 5.1 seconds.

Meanwhile, average fuel consumption is 7.2 liters per 100 km (32.67 US mpg). In terms of design, the Audi SQ5 TDI comes with a platinum gray single-frame grille with its galvanized double bars in an aluminum-look finish, a roof spoiler and the modified bumpers. Audi offers the new model in the crystal effect paint finishes Estoril Blue or Panther Black.

Just like any other S model, the interior has black trim and exudes a sporty elegance. Still the headlining is optionally available in lunar silver. The instrument dials are gray and include a 3D-design S badge, the needles are white and the pedals and shift paddles have an aluminum-look finish. The new Audi SQ5 TDI will be available in the first quarter of 2013 and will carry a price tag of €58,500.

The exterior appearance of the new Audi Q5 is defined not only by its dynamic proportions but also its flowing lines and elegant curves emanating from its solid body. One of these lines is the so-called tornado that flows just below the Q5’s side windows and runs just above its wheels. There is also the so-called roof line, which on the new Audi Q5 flows in a coupe-like arch, tapering early to make it seem that the A and C pillars of the vehicle are sweeping back. This roof line is visually extended by the Q5 spoiler.

New Audi Q5 roof is also provided with roof rails that are finished in anodized aluminum or in optional black. The vehicle also features a crossbar as standard. Just like the other Audi Q models, the new Audi Q5 features a tailgate that seemingly wraps around its bound, while the windows is surrounded by a standard high-gloss package.

Despite the changes on the exterior of the new Audi Q5, its overall dimensions remain virtually the same. It measures 4,629 mm (182.24 in) in length, 1,898 mm (74.72 inches) in width and 1,627 mm (64.06 inches) in height. Featuring short overhangs, the new Audi Q5 has a wheelbase that measures 2,812 mm (110.71 in).

For the latest model year, the new Audi Q5 is fitted with a front end that seems to be wider and lower. This front end is defined by a high-gloss black hexagonal single-frame grille that features vertical chrome bars and 3D Audi rings. Audi also provided the new Q5 with a new bumper that now features large integrated air inlets with high-gloss black inserts. Likewise, Audi provided the vehicle’s standard fog lights with chrome ring surrounds.

On the other hand, the new Audi Q5 is now gifted with a new set of headlights that bestow this new vehicle with a more imposing look. When the optional xenon plus lights are availed, the Q5’s LED daytime running lights are formed into a ring that nearly follows the contour of the headlights. Adaptive light – a unit that combines a dynamic cornering light and a static turning light – is also available for the new Audi Q5. On the rear, the new Audi Q5 features a wrap-around LED strips that served as the tail lights – resulting to a harmonious interplay with the xenon plus headlights on the front.

SQ5 TDI Audi exclusive concept in Paris

Performance SUV with new design solutions as a future limited production vehicle from quattro GmbH

With 230 kW (313 hp), the Audi SQ5 TDI is the new top model of the Q5 model series and also the first S model in the history of Audi with a diesel engine. Added to this performance is a dash of exclusivity: a limited production vehicle from quattro GmbH, which Audi is presenting at the Paris Motor Show as the "SQ5 TDI Audi exclusive concept." The performance SUV will be showcasing new design solutions in the interior and an exclusive exterior finish in a limited production run of just 50 vehicles beginning the first quarter of 2013.

The status of the SQ5 TDI Audi exclusive concept is readily apparent from its appearance alone. The Aral Blue crystal effect exterior finish was specially developed for the exclusive, limited production model and conveys an amazing feeling of depth. As with every S model from Audi, the exterior mirrors are in aluminum look. Xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights are standard. The four exhaust tailpipes dominate the rear of the vehicle.

The interior of the SQ5 TDI Audi exclusive concept dazzles with striking contrasts: The leather multifunction sports steering wheel and the gear lever gaiter in black Fine Nappa leather are accentuated with contrasting stitching in snow white, as are the center armrest and the dashboard cover. A special highlight are the black sport seats covered in Fine Nappa leather, which also feature contrasting stitching in snow white and black, woven leather in the center section of the seats. The SQ5 TDI Audi exclusive concept marks the first time that woven leather has been used in a production vehicle.

The Alcantara headlining, the blind for the sunroof and the inlays and applications in the doors shimmer in snow white. The inlays are natural grain ash. The open-pored veneer has been specially treated to emphasize the grain. The door trims and the entry sills sport Audi exclusive badges.

Production of the SQ5 TDI Audi exclusive concept is limited to 50 vehicles, and the price in Germany will be €92,000. It will be launched in the first quarter of 2013 together with the SQ5 TDI, which will be available from dealerships for €58,500.
