Peugeot opens the order books on its all-electric iOn

Can't wait to get your hands on Peugeot's all-electric iOn? Well, the car will go on sale in late 2010 yet but already, Peugeot is receiving pre-reservations on the iOn. Peugeot intends for the iOn, which was launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show last September, to rival the Mitsubishi iMiEV. Citroen revealed its own version, the C-Zero, last week. Although Peugeot has started taking orders for the iOn, the company has yet to decide the exact terms of its availability.
Peugeot is considering whether the car will be available to purchase outright or if leasing would be better due to the battery cost. A Peugeot spokesman said that the company has received "significant interest" from both private and fleet sectors and that plans will be finalized as the on-sale date nears. Powering the iOn is a permanent magnetic synchronous motor, which produces 47kW (64bhp) and 133lb ft of torque between 0 and 2000rpm. Power is sent to the rear axle by a single-speed reduction gear. Instead of nickel-metal hydride batteries, a center-mounted 330-volt lithium-ion battery pack has been used because it is lighter and more durable, while offering equivalent performance.
When plugged into a conventional 220-volt socket, a full recharge of the battery pack takes six hours. But for fast charging, 30 minutes of using a 400-volt socket will achieve an 80% charge. Peugeot claims that the iOn has a range of 80 miles and a top speed of 80mph. Acceleration time is 15 seconds to go from 0-62mph while the car can go from 37-56mph in 6 seconds. Standard features will include ESP, traction control, ABS, electric windows, air conditioning and six airbags.
