Peugeot preparing new electric vehicle based on Mitsubishi iMiev

The French carmaker Peugeot will be moving toward the electric vehicle class by rebadging the Mitsubishi iMiEV. Although the two auto manufacturers had an agreement since June 2008 to work on EVs nothing has been finalized up to this time. The merger would mean that the Peugeot logo will soon be found on the Japanese iMiEV. The move will save the French carmaker the time it takes to develop the technology for electric vehicles which is becoming more and more accepted.
The road tax scheme of the UK is favorable towards users of eco cars, but up to now Peugeot does not have a green badge to speak of. However, this could all change contingent on the performance of the rebadged iMiEV. The Peugeot version comes with an identical body to the Mitsubishi microcar, upon which the French intends to build the electric unit powered by lithium-ion batteries located under the seats.
Now the French have an already developed EV to exhibit in their showrooms and hope to sell around 10,000 units in 2011, which is double to the expected production number of the Japanese carmaker. The car will most likely come with the same price tag as the Mitsubishi variant.
