Pininfarina to launch its electric car by autumn 2010

Pininfarina Bluecar EVBy autumn, the electric car that is being developed by Vincent Bollore and Pininfarina S.p.A. would be available. Bollore, a French financier, revealed this information to Reuters at the Geneva Motor Show. While major carmakers such as PSA/Peugeot Citroen SA, Renault SA, Nissan Motor Co., Mitsubishi Motor Corp. are separately working on their own electric car launches, the Bollore-Pininfarina team will not focus on private sales yet and will instead offer the Bluecar to fleet customers like rental car companies. It is expected that as long as there are no problems seen in the crash tests, then the car will be available by autumn. Bollore, head of the Bollore group, revealed that two battery plants, which were recently inaugurated in France, would have an annual production capacity of 15,000 30 kWh batteries per year by 2013. Bollore said that with this capacity, the facility could provide power for 30,000 Pininfarina cars or 10,000 buses, or 60,000 small urban vehicles. Bollore clarified that the partnership aims to have a mix of the three. Pininfarina CEO Silvio Angori told Reuters that in 2011, he anticipates being able to ship 2,000 electric cars. Bollore is actually keener on using lithium-metal-polymer batteries, rather than lithium-ion batteries, which most carmakers are eyeing. Photo gallery after the jump!
