Pontiac Vibe is safe to drive despite its inclusion in Toyota’s recall

General Motors Co. insists on the safety of the Pontiac Vibe, despite its inclusion in Toyota Motor Corp.'s sticking pedal recall. The 2009-2010 Vibes are affected by Toyota‚ recall since they are sister vehicles with the Toyota Matrix produced at GM and Toyota's former joint venture plant in Fremont, Calif.
In a statement made last Friday, GM said that before the recall was announced, it had received no complaints from Vibe drivers about stuck accelerators. However, since the recall, complaints had started coming in. GM said that an investigation is ongoing but that none of those cases had resulted in a crash. Continued after the jump!
GM advises any Vibe driver who experiences problems with the accelerator to park the car and ask to have it towed to a GM dealer. According to GM spokesman Alan Adler, GM thinks that Toyota is responsible for the Vibe recall since it was Toyota that designed, engineered and manufactured the car.
Toyota spokesman Brian Lyons opposes this and said that GM was responsible for Pontiac Vibe recalls because GM had sourced pedals from supplier CTS to build the Vibe as part of the joint venture, called New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., or NUMMI.
Adler responded in turn by saying that GM has no supplier relationship with CTS and that GM expects Toyota to pay for fixing Vibes. Furthermore, GM said that it will soon inform Vibe owners about bringing the cars to Buick-GMC dealerships as soon as Toyota prescribes a remedy for the problem.
